With our new Behind the Scenes series, we’ll be exploring some of America’s most exciting cities for electronic music, their biggest and best club nights and the local artists behind the hype. First off we’re heading South to Austin, Texas where the party goes on long after March. Christian Barbuto from the amazing Electric Avenue blog is your guide.
Howdy from Austin Texas, the ‘Live Music Capital of the World’!. Christian Barbuto here, proudly blogging for Point Blank Plus. It’s a crisp Fall day, blue skies above my studio trailer located deep in the hills outside of the city. As I work a bassline on the Moog, I can hear my neighbour picking a country twang on his guitar. In a stark juxtaposition to the world’s perception of Texas’ cowboy culture, Austin has just recovered from an epic techno set by M_nus artist Ambivalent, which took place on the Lanai rooftop as part of the many events during the Formula One Racing weekend.
Austin’s population is just shy of a million but with as many live music events as cities 10 times its size, boredom is a rare phenomenon! With numerous large-scale music festivals taking place throughout the year, such as South by Southwest and Austin City Limits, weekdays and weekends blend together like gin and tonic. Kingdom Nightclub is a boutique venue that attracts international and legendary talent such as Timo Maas, Steve Lawler, Derrick Carter, Sasha, Digweed and Claude Von Stroke, each of whom have raved about the Bass Maxx soundsystem. Another Austin hangout is PLUSH, which has supported local and international talent for nearly 15 years. This dark, grimy sweat box has a jewel of a sound system as well, and is known as a local’s favorite.
As the local Austin blogger for local dance music journal www.electricavenueatx.com & along with a few tricks of the trade I have learned in close to 15 years of DJing, I’m really excited to carry the honour of writing Point Blank’s first blog piece from Austin. On behalf of this city, I’d like to express just how much we love great underground dance music, and in these next few blogs, share some fun facts about the music scene well as its lesser-known quirks and idiosyncrasies. For instance, like many musicians, I live in a trailer in a campground where I write music, organize techno events and at night head into town to DJ at the aforementioned venues! I’d love for you to peep out my tunes at soundcloud.com/cbarbuto, and shoot me an email there too to chat about the city of Austin.
