Club Recommendations: September 2016 (Discwoman, Anthony Naples, Shanti Celeste + More)

Welcome to Point Blank’s monthly club recommendations column, where we trawl the listings to bring you the essential events taking place in London and Los Angeles. Join us for the end of summer edition as we swap shorts in the club, outdoor raving and 6am Ubers in the sun for music of a darker hue. First up, high tensile basement sounds courtesy of Discwoman x Find Me In the Dark, while Pickle Factory plays host to obfuscated club music courtesy of man of the moment Huerco S and his label boss Anthony Naples. On the other side of the pond, we’ve opted for a killer line-up at Union with John Talabot, Roman Flügel, Lena Willikens, Heidi and more. Plus, there’s some balmy house flex from Shanti Celeste – well, it is LA after all.

For those of you dreaming of seeing yourself included here, heading up the next big summer festival or slaying clubs around the world, you can find out about our range of courses in LondonLA and online to kickstart your journey. You can also book a tour of our London studio complex by heading to our contact page.

Find Me In The Dark x Discwoman with Volvox, Umfang, Rrose, Asquith – Corsica Studios – 9th September

full-1024x538

The always great Find Me In the Dark have teamed with NYC feminist collective Discwoman, who we profiled recently, for an all-nighter at Corsica Studios. Heading up proceedings are Discwoman’s Volvox and Umfang with their corrective strain of take-no-prisoners electro and techno. Stroboscopic Artefact’s Rrose will bring some texture to the proceedings with his deeply meditative riffs on techno and beyond, while Lobster Theremin head Asquith will no doubt be tracing the outer reaches of scuffed, explorative electronics, as is his yen. Sets by SIREN crew members re:ni & Sybil and NTS’s Debonair cement this as an essential date. Grab your tickets here.

The Pickle Factory x Proibito with Anthony Naples & Huerco S – The Pickle Factory – 30th September

Anthony Naples

The first UK showcase of Anthony Naples’ Proibitio, this date catches the label at a key point. Inaugurated back in 2013, from the outset it appeared Naples was mining a similalr vein of lo-fi, scorched earth house music as L.I.E.S and White Material. However, June’s critically acclaimed release of Huerco S’s LP For Those Of You Who Have Never (And Also Those Who Have) suggests the imprint isn’t shy of wandering even further into murky ambience. Naturally, Huerco S will be joining Naples at the Pickle Factory, where the intimate surroundings should be a good fit for the defiantly slanted house and techno – and deviations thereof. Bag tickets now.

Fine Time with Shanti Celeste – TBA – 10th September

shanti

Chilean-born but Bristol through and through, Shanti Celeste has been blowing up for a minute, so it makes sense she’s finally hitting the road for her first US tour. Part of the Idle Hands crew – Celeste worked behind the counter of the storied record shop before releasing music on the respected imprint – we’re certain her famously balmy productions and loose-limbed house sets, will hit the spot in the perennially sunny Los Angeles. Also stepping up is London’s Randomer, whose most recent releases have come via Dekmantel and Neighbourhood (the new label helmed by Point Blank instructor Tasha). Info here.

Rhondavous with John Talabot, Roman Flügel, Lena Willikens + more – Union – 23rd September

_41A7176

Barcelona’s John Talabot is still best known for distilling emotion and memory into slow-release doses of club floor melancholy. Four years on from its release, his first and only LP Fin is an indisputable modern classic. Still, Talabot remains an influential presence as a curator and label head too, with Hivern Discs hitting some serious form in 2016 with releases from JMII and Dorisburg. At this, a huge Union blow out, Talabot is joined by seven other acts across three stages, not least Salon Des Amateurs’ resident and Comemé signee Lena Willikens and the consistently brilliant Roman Flügel.
