Drum Production & Sound Design in Ableton Live Part 1: Programming Drums

Ableton Live is renowned for its sampling creative capabilities, excelling at quickly allowing you to put ideas together with drag-and-drop ease. Throw in Live’s Impulse and Drum Rack devices for instantly editing your chopped samples, and Live becomes a fantastic tool for putting drum beats together. We thought we’d enlist the help of our Ableton tutor John Watson for a brand new series showing you how to sculpt incredible drums from start to finish, using Ableton Live.

John teaches both our Deep and Minimal House and Mixing Dance Music in Ableton courses, which are both part of our Ableton Live Diploma course, so he’s the perfect person to show you how to make killer beats in Live. Starting off with programming, John shows you how to create realistic patterns and with some simple tricks. It only scratches the surface of what you’ll learn on our Ableton Live Diploma course and if you do decide to take it you’ll be in good company – artists like Claude Von Stroke, Aluna Francis and Nicole Moudaber have all studied Live with us! Find out more about the course here and watch the video below. Make sure you subscribe to our YouTube channel to keep up to date with our latest tutorials and course previews.
