Friday Forum Live – Deconstruction of Sister Sledge ‘Thinking of You’

After a long hiatus, having bidden farewell to our former Content Executive Carly Horden, we are back with another edition of Friday Forum Live. It’s another of Lead Course Developer Ski Oakenfull’s famous deconstruction videos but, this time he is joined by Creative Content Developer, Graham Silbiger, who assists in mapping out the arrangement and lends his considerable bass-playing powers to record live. ‘Thinking of You’ by Sister Sledge is a stone-cold classic, and we’ve been unbelievably excited to present this deconstruction ever since our students recorded those from the Royal Academy of Music laying down the string parts some months ago. As ever, find out more about the many ways you can learn music production with us here.

This was a unique FFL, in that we used sounds that were recorded by our advanced Sound Engineering students. This was partly because we’re really proud of the results of that recording session and partly to draw attention to that fact that all of the sounds recorded by our students at Point Blank become part of a bank of samples that are available to any and all who study with us. So, if you’re a student and you fancy getting your hands on some string samples, these are yours to do what you will with them.

Along with said strings, Graham and Ski used vocals recorded at Point Blank, as well as drums laid down by our studio assistant Ricky Vianello. We get some quick notes on sound recording and Hope, the vocalist who was brought in. Then, given their respective specialities, they go into detail on the chords and bass parts before re-recording those parts live in the studio.

This was one of our all-time favourite FFLs and we hope you gleaned as much knowledge from the session as we had fun doing it. If you’d like to learn more about any of our schools in London, Mumbai, Ibiza, Los Angeles or Online, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
