Earlier this month, a lucky few selected students headed to Amsterdam to take part in an exclusive songwriting camp, organised by Point Blank and Conservatoire Haarlem. All expenses including flights, airport transfers and accommodation were paid for by Point Blank, this was something that we provided as part of our students’ courses,, and we hope to be able to continue this in future for many more of our students. This is one of the many ways that we connect you directly to the industry when you study with us.
Four of our London Diploma students were given the unique opportunity to kick-start their career at an exclusive International Writers’ Camp, pitching their tracks to major record labels and making some invaluable industry connections. Check out the summary video below to find out what went on, and read on to get the full lowdown on our students’ experiences.
The Conservatoire Haarlem International Writers Camp took place on the week of 2nd November, and was a unique one-off event bringing together a smorgasbord of international songwriting and music production talent. Pitches were provided by some of the biggest labels in the industry, including BMG, Armin van Buuren’s label Armada Music, and Cloud 9 (who work with electronic heavyweights like Hardwell, Ummet Ozcan and Dannic).
This month, selected Point Blank students went across to Amsterdam to participate in an exclusive songwriting camp
During the week, songwriting professionals were on hand to provide students with writing, recording and producing their songs. The songs created at the camp were played to the label panel and the best tracks were pitched for release – our students now how their fingers crossed in the hopes that one of their tracks gets signed!
Student Recap – Segg (Spinnin’ Records)
Segg needs little introduction as a member of Point Blank’s alumni and as an artist in his own right. He studied our Music Production & Sound Engineering Diploma, and back in May his remix of Michael Calfan’s ‘Treasured Soul’ was snapped up by Spinnin’ Records for release under Warner Music UK. Segg was also selected to play at the Point Blank Graduation Event in September, so he’s definitely one to keep an eye on.

On attending, Segg said: “It was such a great experience, but also really intense at the same time. It was really inspiring to work with such talented people. We had to do a pop track which is completely different from what I’m used to doing. This was a big challenge for me and it makes you think out of the box, but in the end it works pretty well. The most difficult part was trying to make a really catchy song, but keep it simple. All of the instructors and the coaches were always reminding us that “less is more”. Since then, that’s what I’ve been trying to do in my productions, and it makes sense.”
“I learnt a lot from the camp, especially trying to be efficient in a really short space of time and trying lots of different writing techniques. Even if most of these “rules” are really related to pop music, I find it interesting to apply some of them in electronic music and especially in my personal projects.”
Student Recap – Halina Rice (Point Blank Music)
Like Segg above, Halina Rice has just released an EP on Point Blank Music. She’s one of the hardest working people we’ve ever met, and by the looks of things it’s going to pay off in a big way. Returning Point Blank student Halina originally studied our Music Production and Sound Engineering Diploma, and is currently taking a stand alone Music Business Project module. She told us she chose to study at Point Blank because of the school’s focus on electronic music production. You can listen to Halina’s ‘Krin’ EP below – it came out on our label this week.
“Overall, this has been one of the best experiences in music I’ve ever had – the standard was incredibly high and it really pushed my skills and knowledge. I particularly found that everything I had been taught on the Composition course at Point Blank was a ‘life-saver’ in terms of being able to quickly analyse song structures – verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge etc – and think about how the arrangement of these would work as well as more easily communicate this with my teammates. I would highly recommend this experience for anyone who is interested in songwriting or producing as a career and it is an experience I would happily repeat.”
Student Recap – Adryana Gold
Adryana is currently in the middle of studying our Music Production Certificate (part of the Music Production & Sound Engineering Complete Master Diploma), which she has travelled over from Lisbon in Portugal to do. Adryana is a hugely promising songwriter and solo artist with a big future ahead of her, which made us really excited to select her for the writing camp.
On her time at the camp, Adryana said: “I had an amazing time. I had the opportunity to meet people that can change my life in the future and I gained a new found motivation to keep fighting for a career. I would like to thank everyone who was involved in the project. I had an excellent experience and I would definitely do it again.”
Student Recap – Tuya
Tuya (pictured above, second from the right) looks sad to be going home and leaving the writing camp
Tuya, like Adryana Gold, also hails from Lisbon in Portugal. He’s got a real knack for crafting euphoric, big room bangers, so it would’ve been rude not to get him involved with the writing camp. He’s currently studying our Music Production, Sound Engineering, Business & DJ Diploma in London, and it’s looking like 2016 is going to be a big year for him following his attendance in The Netherlands. Listen to his ‘Jammu’ remix below.
If you want to be able to get involved with exclusive opportunities like the above Writing Camp, you should come to London and study our Complete Master Diploma. As a two year course, it represents the most comprehensive programme of study Point Blank has to offer. As well as all of that, you’ll be given the chance to get involved with plenty of industry opportunities and experiences, just like the one above.
