We like it when people dance; it makes us happy. That’s why the latest release on our Point Blank Music label is a double whammy of hip-thrusting house from South African producer So Schway. The ‘Something Good’ EP is the second release from the up-and-coming producer, following his debut EP ‘Touch’ which came out on Australian label Medium Rare Recordings last year.
Describing the creative process behind his latest low-slung and melodic offering – out now on iTunes and Beatport – So Schway said: “With this EP I wanted to make something good and funnily enough I came across a vocal which said exactly that. So I grabbed the vocal, went for bassline sounds that I’ve never used before and just made a track which I felt expressed exactly the mellow mood I had when I made it.”
The urge to create music struck So Schway when he was a student at high school. “I would be that guy with all the latest music, walking around with his headphones and Walkman phone (a Sony Ericsson at the time), ignoring everything else and just living in the music.” House quickly became So Schway’s genre of choice and after starting his musical journey alone, he soon realised the awesome power music has in bringing people together: “I like that with house music you can connect with so many others who feel the same way about music as you do,” he says. “I’ve always thought that I was the only one who felt that way about a certain sound, melody or groove but then I found out along the way that I could share this passion with many others across the world who felt the same way I did.”
In 2010 So Schway took a DJ course, started playing around with Fruity Loops and then graduated onto Cubase 5. For the next three years he honed his craft as a DJ and a producer under a different alias, taking inspiration from artists such as Kyle Watson, Billy Kenny, Kry Wolf, Hector Couto and Dene Antony. Impatient to lay down the tunes flying around his head, So Schway soon realised that to make the music he wanted to make, he would have to put the hours in. “The hardest thing I had to learn about being a producer was to see that it wasn’t a sprint; it’s a slow and steady process where you don’t just rush into things, but rather focus on being patient and putting in the effort and a lot of your own time to actually be successful. “
The hard work eventually paid off and now So Schway is producing at a level where he can confidently challenge listeners to ‘Schway, or be Schwayed’. He said: “In 2014 I started producing with the new alias and went for the quality over quantity approach and tried to connect myself with great producers and mastering engineers. It’s been going smooth ever since and I am happy more than ever.”
