It’s been a while but today we’re delighted to share with you the latest wizardry developed by our master of deconstructions, Ski Oakenfull, recorded live at IMS Malta. This time he takes on Calvin Harris’ massive summer hit ‘One Kiss’ featuring Dua Lipa. This isn’t the first time he’s tackled a Calvin Harris tune so if you’re a fan check out his take on ‘Slide’ featuring Frank Ocean from early in the year. In case you don’t know, Ski is our Head of Curriculum so whether you study with us in London or Online (or indeed elsewhere) he will have had a major hand in what you learn at the school. Check out the deconstruction below.
The track is the latest in Calvin Harris’ hotstreak, reaching eardrums all over the Global North. Written with Jessie Reyez, the track blends loads of elements from classic deep house with the Mark Ronson-esque brass from Harris’ early career. Some interesting tidbits from the deconstruction include the fact that it’s in an obscure A Phrygian Mode, and may or may not contain some vocals from Harris. The original video as always includes a cameo from the man himself as well. In any case, Ski goes deep into each element and where it sits in the arrangement, and build the track up on the fly. A stone cold modern classic, you can be sure ‘One Kiss’ will be reminisced about by countless of teenagers in 5 years time.
