How Hypertechno Pioneer Macon Went from Bedroom Beats to a Grammy Nomination – Masterclass

We’ve just released a new masterclass on our YouTube channel featuring the innovative German DJ and producer Macon, and trust us, you don’t want to miss this one! If you’re unfamiliar with Macon, he’s the musical mastermind behind the hypertechno movement that’s been taking clubs and streaming platforms by storm. With over 120 million Spotify streams under his belt and the distinction of being one of only a handful of Germans ever nominated for a Grammy Award, Macon’s journey from bedroom producer to international sensation is nothing short of inspirational.

Want to produce and DJ like Macon? Our BA (Hons) Music Production and DJ Performance Degree offers all the essentials needed for a successful career. You’ll be learning from lecturers who’ve worked with massive names like Swedish House Mafia and Pharrell Williams, plus you’ll get to play at legendary London spots like fabric and Ministry of Sound. With classes taught on fully spec’d Alpha Theta/Pioneer DJ equipment and exclusive access to our immersive Dolby Atmos studios, your journey from enthusiast to professional starts here. April applications are still open—turn your passion into a profession at pointblank Music School.

Humble Beginnings

Macon’s story begins like many aspiring producers – as a 14-year-old lad tinkering with music production software. His first taste of success came through a rather unconventional route – remixing video game character voices with copyright-free music on YouTube! This cheeky bit of creativity earned him a whopping 120,000 followers by the time he was just 15.

From Ghost Producer to Centre Stage

At 17, Macon’s talent landed him a spot in a writing camp for prominent German DJ Mo, kickstarting his professional career. After a year of proper grafting (that’s intensive daily practice for the uninitiated), he secured his first official release on SP Records.

For the next three years, Macon worked behind the scenes as a ghost producer, co-creating tracks that collectively racked up around 100 million streams. The pinnacle of this period came in 2019 when he collaborated with his idol Oliver Helens. Despite this success, Macon felt something was missing – his own identity as an artist.

The Birth of Hypertechno

In our masterclass, Macon shares the brilliant market gap he identified. He noticed people loved tracks like Dinoro’s “In My Mind” and SAR’s “Miss You,” but there was a shortage of similar tunes. Taking inspiration from how producer Vice had popularised “slap house,” Macon decided to create his own genre.

What exactly is hypertechno? As Macon explains with his characteristic enthusiasm, it’s essentially pop vocals layered over thumping 140 BPM techno beats. After several attempts that didn’t quite catch on, his Lady Gaga “Just Dance” remix absolutely exploded on TikTok, and hypertechno was officially born!

The Macon Method

One of the most fascinating parts of the masterclass is where Macon reveals his clever strategy for establishing the genre:

  1. Making tracks freely downloadable for DJs (genius for spreading the sound organically)
  2. Consistently labelling everything as “hypertechno” (branding 101, right there)
  3. Creating memorable moments in tracks with recognisable vocals (giving clubbers those “Ohhh!” moments)
  4. Using longer buildups for live sets (keeping dancers on their toes)

Evolution and Future

Perhaps most impressive is Macon’s commitment to evolution. As hypertechno has grown bigger than its creator, he’s pushing into harder techno territory and focusing on original productions to differentiate himself. His current mission? Developing enough original material to play full sets of his own music, rather than the same hypertechno tracks other DJs are spinning.
