It’s been four years since AlunaGeorge broke through with their immaculate piece of futurist-pop “Your Drums, Your Love” and it still sounds fresh. The track’s use of negative space and bass is an evocative timestamp as any of a particularly pioneering period of popular music history, a curiously understated moment that preceded the stadium-sized maximalism that would go on to define pop’s next phase. It wasn’t a huge surprise that the duo, consisting of Aluna Francis – a graduate of Point Blank’s Introduction to Music Production on Ableton Live – and George Reid, were subsequently nominated for the BBC Sound of 2013 poll, eventually coming in second behind Haim.
Like many electronic pop acts in the internet age, AlunaGeorge have been quick to embrace collaboration and stylistic variegation. Their new album scattered with some of the hottest names to drop in ’16, from Popcaan to Kaytranada, but they look beyond the world of music, too. To mark the release of their latest album, the follow up to 2013’s ‘Body Music’, the duo took up residence in a space at Mack Sennett Studios, which also happens to be the home of Point Blank Los Angeles. Here, the duo worked alongside IHEARTCOMIX to create the I Remember Experience. Jesus Rivera (AKA Demonbabies) and Franki Chan designed twelve unique visual themes for each stage – twelve for each song from the album. In an interesting way, the interdisciplinary happening nodded back to the white cube setting of the “Your Drums, Your Love”. Here’s how it went down.
