Welcome to Point Blank’s monthly club recommendations column, where we trawl the listings to bring you the essential events taking place in London and Los Angeles. Making the Stateside cut this week is an unmissable opportunity to catch Detroit originator Robert Hood share a bill with Ghostly International’s Mike Servito and a mouthwatering Four Tet/Andy Stott/Ben UFO triple hander. In London, the Peckham Rye Music Festival marries local talent with big names down in SE15, while art school provocateurs PC Music continue to peel back the layers of irony at their anticipated Scala engagement. May, in short, is looking to be massive. For those of you dreaming of seeing yourself featured on future lineups – or maybe you’re just feeling inspired – find out more info on our range of DJ courses in London and online to kickstart your journey there.
Fine Time w/ Robert Hood, Mike Servito and Tahl K – Lot 613 [Los Angeles] – Saturday 21st May
Whether it’s under his own name or via his recent Floorplan and Paradigm Shift projects, the Detroit pioneer has proved himself a relevant and powerful force within techno some two decades since he started out. It’s fitting then, that he’ll be sharing a bill with Ghostly International’s Mike Servito, a DJ who wears his Detroit influences proudly. Factor in the warehouse vibe of the venue and you’ve got a heavy night on your hands. Full details here.
FYF Presents: Four Tet (Live) w/ Andy Stott, Ben UFO – Pappy & Harriet’s [Los Angeles] – Saturday 7th May
Four Tet’s live sets are variegated, frequently transcendent and always highly anticipated. We imagine this date, part of his US tour alongside Hessle Audio’s Ben UFO, will be no different. They’re joined by Andy Stott, making it an even more appetising proposition – especially as Stott’s recent Too Many Voices LP cracked a window on his airless, oppressive sound and hinted at a new phase in the producer’s development. We look forward to seeing how that will play out here. Full details here.
Outspoken Invites Soul Button (Steyoyoke) & Doc Martin – Couture [Los Angeles] – Friday 13th May
Frequent party Outspoken continue the run of quality bookings at Couture with Berlin’s Soul Button and San Fran house legend Doc Martin. Expect the Steyoyoke boss to keep things on a deep, textural tip, while who can second guess Doc? Definitely one for the house heads. Danny B is on warm-up duties. Full details here.
Peckham Rye Music Festival w/ Juan Atkins, Lawrence, Benji B, Throwing Shade + more – various venues, Peckham [London] – Friday 13th – Sunday 15th May
South London’s post codes continue to pull focus from those north of the river, as is excellently demonstrated by this three day party in Peckham. Taking place across various venues, from the massive Bussey Building to the grimy Canavan’s Peckham Pool Club via the frankly gastro Montpelier pub, the organisers have strived to balance the big names – Juan Atkins is headlining – with local talent. Full details here.
PC Music Presents Pop Cosmos! w/ Danny L Harle, Hannah Diamond, GFOTY, A. G. Cook + more – The Scala [London] – Thursday 19th May
PC Music, the art school sorts that they are, may delight in their divisive reputation but there’s no denying their actual, real world pop credibility as they swap internet thinkpieces for daytime Radio 1. Weird. This party at The Scala in King’s Cross features all the names from PC Music’s top tier including Hannah Diamond, break out star Danny L Harle and label head A. G. Cook. Fun is obligatory.
