From Dream to Stage: How Sam The Zoologist Sold Out Their First Headline Show!

pointblank Recordings (PBR) artist Sam The Zoologist recently took a major step forward in their career with a sold-out headline show. It is an incredible achievement that reflects his growing momentum. After going viral on Instagram and seeing a surge in followers, Sam continues to strive both online and on stage. With the support of the PBR team behind them, this milestone is just one example of what’s possible when talent is matched with the right guidance and opportunities.

At pointblank, our in-house label pointblank Recordings is dedicated to nurturing emerging artists, offering hands-on support across every stage of their journey- from studio to spotlight. We caught up with Sam to hear more about the show, the build-up, and what it’s like to work closely with a team that’s just as passionate about your success as you are.

If you’re looking to enhance your music career and potentially perform at prestigious venues, our BA (Hons) Music Production & Sound Engineering Degree puts you in the studio, while our BA (Hons) Music Business Degree allows students to explore management and A&R development under the mentorship of industry heavyweights like Kwame Kwaten and Jonny Taylor. Wherever you’re aiming to go, we’ll help you get there.

With that in mind, let’s talk to our lovely artist, Sam!

It finally happened! How do you feel about the show?

I feel amazing about it. I am so happy with how it went and proud that we managed to create something so special. I have never had so much fun in my life. It was incredible to see so many people I didn’t know, genuine fans of my music. I wish I could do it every day forever!

What was the planning process like?

It was probably the most complicated part for me, as it was all very new. I oversaw all aspects of it, as there was no promoter involved. There was a sea of logistics before I even started thinking about the music. I spent a good month planning everything, and then two months working and thinking of how the show was going to come alive. I am so glad my vision for it worked and came alive like it did.

Who was involved in making it happen? How did PBR help?

The people involved were me, my bandmates (Pete, Joe and Misha) and the venue. I also had the amazing No Cash Refunds opening for me, who did an incredible job. Jonny (from pointblank Recordings) put me in touch with the venue and was very available to me as I asked enormous amounts of questions about every detail. For that, I am grateful!

What happened during the show?

My band and I played a sold-out show! It was packed. I couldn’t believe all those people were there to see me. It was unreal.

We played all my current releases and one more. I got to dance like a maniac and sing meaningful songs; it was such a huge range of emotions, but I am so glad these all got through to the audience.

Also, I heard a fan missed your gig. What happened?

Yes, unfortunately, a fan was sent to the wrong venue by the staff (there is another venue right downstairs). When they arrived, Pete and I decided to bring them into the venue and sing Happily (one of my songs) to them personally. I also gave them some free merch and hopefully made their night at least 10% better! They will also have a free ticket to the next headline show.

Any advice on students who want to do a headline show?

I would say wait for the right time. This was something I have had in my head for ages, but due to all the things that have been happening with my social media, I thought it would be the perfect thing to slowly build towards. Also, acknowledge that unless you are at the highest level, you are going to have to promote it like hell!

It can be a bit demoralising when you announce something and the response isn’t quite what you hoped for, but that’s natural. People need a few reminders!

Lastly, if it feels right to you, go for it! My live ability was my weak point before this show, and quite a few people told me I wasn’t ready for it. I didn’t believe them and went for it, and I think I proved to everyone I can raise the level when it comes to live shows.

Any upcoming projects/shows we should be excited about?

I am currently recording a whole new EP to be released with PBR. No shows planned at the moment, but I definitely aim to get at least another big one in this year!
