International Women’s Day takes place on March 8th each year, celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. With that in mind, we wanted to take a quick look back at just a few of the many female students who’ve studied with Point Blank and gone on to huge success.
If seeing our students (both female and male) doing so well has got you inspired to study with us, you should take a look at our Complete Master Diploma. It all comes as part of studying in our brand new second studio complex in London – you can book yourself on a tour here.
Aluna Francis (AlunaGeorge)
Aluna Francis is one half of the world-beating duo AlunaGeorge. She studied production in Ableton Live at Point Blank (part of the Complete Master Diploma) before taking off to huge chart success with tracks like ‘You Know You Like It’ and #1 hit ‘White Noise’ with another UK duo, Disclosure. As soon as AlunaGeorge started getting noticed, they were immediately labelled as ones to watch and were listed for the Critics’ Choice award at the BRITs, as well as coming second on the BBC’s coveted Sound of 2013 list alongside many other accolades.
Last month, AlunaGeorge released their new single ‘I’m In Control’ (watch the video above) featuring Jamaican dancehall legend Popcaan. It’s been blowing up the radio recently with plays from the likes of Annie Mac, and demonstrates Aluna’s diversity as a recording artist in a very competitive industry. Aluna is just one example of our highly successful female graduates, and she is one we’re very proud to be able to shout about at times like these.
Nicole Moudaber (Drumcode, Intec, VIVa MUSiC)
Nicole Moudaber studied DJing with Point Blank (part of the Complete Master Diploma), and was described by Carl Cox as “the most underrated DJ” in an interview with DJ Mag. The certified global club star has held down residences in Ibiza and at London’s Ministry of Sound, and these days her following is that of cult status. With releases on Adam Beyer’s Drumcode, Intec and Steve Lawler’s VIVa MUSiC, Nicole manages to walk the line between house and techno in her own unique way.
Now, she’s regularly covered by the likes of Resident Advisor, and her Exchange above is a fascinating listen if you want to get an insight into her career, life and music. This summer, Nicole will appear at global events like IMS Ibiza, Coachella, Electric Daisy Carnival New York and Kappa Futurfestival.
Monki (BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 1Xtra, Rinse FM)
After graduating from Point Blank’s Radio Course, Monki played at Annie Mac’s AMP parties, Bestival Radio and managed to bag her own show on Rinse FM. Now, Monki has a show which is broadcast simultaneously on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra each week to millions of listeners. Last year, she reached a milestone in her career and was asked to curate a Fabriclive mix by the landmark London club.
Still closely affiliated with Annie Mac, this summer Monki will be playing Annie’s Lost & Found festival in Malta and does her own Monki & Friends tours which stop at various different cities across the UK.
