At pointblank, we pride ourselves on the opportunities we are able to provide for our students – both past and present. As we like to inspire creativity within our students and enable them to get real-world performance experience, we teamed up with the inimitable Phil Ramocon to present a London Open Mic night. If you’d like to perform, all you need to do is turn up; the pub, The Stag’s Head, Hoxton, has a back-line setup and there will be a sound engineer present at the event to ensure you sound your best! The Open Mic takes place every other Wednesday and starts at 7 pm with sign-up open from 6:30 pm.
This week’s Open Mic will take place on Wednesday, 10th of August – see you there!
Back in 2019, we made our way down to one of the buzzing bi-weekly Open Mic Nights to talk to the man behind the event, the one and only, Phil Ramocon. During our interview with Phil, he discusses the beginnings of the Open Mic and what inspired him to start his own.
Phil Ramocon, the host of the popular Open Mic night, has 25 years of experience in the industry and has worked with the likes of Gregory Isaacs, Neneh Cherry, Jimmy Cliff, Marianne Faithful and toured with the legendary Bob Marley. The Grammy Award-winning pianist, performer and pointblank lecturer is renowned for his co-writing credits on ‘Buffalo Stance’ with Neneh Cherry. Don’t forget to check out our Music Production and Vocal Performance degree.
Our Open Mic is regularly attended by key figures in the music industry who are renowned for scoping out world-class talent. In addition to the previously mentioned Phil Ramocon, who hosts the night, we’ve been visited by the likes of Francis Pettican, President of the publishing company Fairwood Music International, who has worked with the likes of Bob Marley, David Bowie and U2 to mention a few. Getting down to these events is important, as you never know who could be in the crowd.
Leona Lewis, Aluna Francis and Izzy Bizu are just a few of the former pointblank students who have gone on to achieve global success and industry recognition. If you think you have what it takes to join their ranks, why not take a look at our singing and songwriting courses?
