Tips for Starting a Record Label with Sam Divine (DVine Sounds)

Welcome to our latest video feature, this time with a focus on starting a record label. To give you a sense of what it takes DJ Ravine sat down with Sam Divine of DVine Sounds to pick her brains on her journey with the label. Sam also has a stellar career as a DJ  – she is part of the roster at Defected Records and played at pretty much every club in Ibiza, with residencies at pillars of the scene like Sankeys Ibiza and Amnesia. Her production career also started taking off after her debut remix of the garage classic ‘Flowers’ by Sweet Female Attitude. Check out the interview below and take a look at our range of Music Industry courses for comprehensive insights into the world of putting out music.

DVine Sounds, a subsidiary of Defected Records, has been running for over four years, during which time Sam and her self-styled “girl-gang” Camilla and Jess have released music by the likes of DJ Zinc, Todd Terry and Roger Sanchez, and helped develop the careers of artists such as Qubiko and CASSIMM. The latest release ‘The One’ by Blaise, can be found over at Beatport.

Sam’s view of the way to run a successful label stems largely from the hard work and love that is put into it. Throughout the video, the things she stresses most are believing in what you are doing and putting in the graft. Branding and logos are a major element, and while it is a boon to be an existing DJ or producer, there is nothing stopping you from running a successful label without being either. Watch the full video for all that and more, including the trouble with samples, developing artists and learning from the best.
