Ableton Live Tutorial: Creating a Subtractive Synth in BEAP (Max for Live)

We’re back with a special two-part tutorial series, this time with Point Blank course developer and expert instructor Dan Herbert. In these tutorials, Dan focuses on using Max for Live plugin BEAP – available as part of Ableton Suite – to create your own synths, sequencers and more. Dan Herbert teaches the Sound Design module on our online BA (Hons) Music Production & Sound Engineering Degree, on which you can learn everything you need to take your productions to the next level. We are also currently offering 25% off our online courses until the end of the month, so you can save up to £3,900 when enrolling (including a free copy of Ableton Suite or Logic Pro with selected courses).

For those that don’t know, Max for Live is Ableton’s toolkit for building your own custom instruments, effects and tools which you can then share with the rest of the Max for Live community. In this tutorial, Dan Herbert introduces us to BEAP, a platform for creating modular instruments to use in Ableton Live. Dan walks us through the steps necessary to create a simple synthesiser, detailing how to connect up an oscillator, VCA, filter and output correctly and showing us around the interface. Stay tuned for the next episode when Dan will be discussing manipulating sound in BEAP and creating sounds using a sequencer, LFO & granular synth. You can also check out some of our earlier Max for Live tutorials on our YouTube Channel.
