London Club Recommendations: April 2016 (NTS, Legowelt, Secretsundaze + more)

Welcome to Point Blank’s London club recommendations column, where we trawl the capital’s listings to bring you the month’s essential events. April is shaping up to be huge, not least because the mighty NTS Radio crew are celebrating their birthday with a five-day blow out. Elsewhere, London label Lobster Theremin will be taking to London’s Oval Space to demonstrate why they’re now a crucial part of the techno landscape, and Bristol’s adopted son Kowton launches his anticipated full-length south of the river. There’s Point Blank alumni too, in the shape of Monki who’ll be ushering her Monki & Friends tour to a close at The Laundry. Finally, we couldn’t ignore the Secretsundaze Opening Party, featuring an unmissable line-up headed up by house legend Lil’ Louis and Panorama Bar resident Steffi. For those of you dreaming of seeing yourself featured on future lineups, find out more info on our range of DJ courses in London and online to kickstart your journey there.

NTS is 5 w/ Babyfather, Lafawndah, Bill Kouligas, Eclair Fifi, Hieroglyphic Being, Joey LaBeija and loads more – Various venues across London – Monday 4th April through Friday 8th April

NTS 5 BIRTHDAY

For five years NTS has redefined the online radio landscape, prioritising untapped talent and providing a platform for a refreshingly wide range of artists. They easily earned their spot on our survey of the best online radio stations. Unsurprisingly, their fifth birthday blow out promises to cleave closely to their openminded remit, with performances from a huge range of artists across the capital. Overwhelmed? Us too, but highlights include the live outing of Dean Blunt’s Babyfather project at Bloc on Wednesday, while the Friday night party at Corsica Studios looks to be huge with Bill Kouligas, Eclair Fifi, Hieroglyphic Being, Joey LaBeija and more rounding off the week’s festivities. All the info is over here.

Percolate: Lobster Theremin Showcase w/ Legowelt, Tin Man, Route 8, Imre Kiss – Oval Space – 8th April

Legowelt 760

Legowelt heads up the Lobster Theremin Showcase at Oval Space

Since its inaugural release in 2013, courtesy of a then-unknown Palms Trax, Lobster Theremin have quickly established themselves as purveyors of raw, analogue workouts from the weirder end of the techno spectrum. For their showcase at Oval Space, they’ve roped in Dutch analogue don Legowelt with impressive support from Vienna acid maestro Tin Man. Big. Info here.

Livity Sound presents Kowton ‘Utility’ Album Launch w/ Anthony Naples – Phonox – 15th April

Phonox 760

Brixton’s Phonox is the home to Kowton’s album launch

Kowton’s ‘Utility’ LP is already receiving some serious critical heat, reminding us that Bristol’s Livity Sound are a vital force well beyond Bristol’s borders. Joining Kowton and Peverelist is New Yorker Anthony Naples, whose off-beam take on lo-fi house promises to agitate proceedings even further. More info here.

The final date in the Monki & Friends tour is guaranteed to go off. The Radio 1 tastemaker (and *ahem* Point Blank alumni) will be hitting East London space The Laundry with Wookie, Dread D, Cadenza and some special guests for a night of underground music celebrating the ‘Monki & Friends’ EP. She was a student on one of our Radio Courses, by the way. More info and tickets here.

Secretsundaze Opening Party w/ Lil’ Louis, Steffi, Kornél Kovács, Moxie – St John at Hackney – 30th April

The long established Secretsundaze brand – and anything that boasts a booking agency and label alongside its well established club night is definitely a brand – manages to remain relevant because of line-ups like this. The daytime rave boasts house living legend Lil Louis alongside Berlin’s Steffi, who’ll no doubt be translating some distinctive P-Bar style to day. It’s going to get messy. More info here.
