The 1,425 day Siege of Sarajevo was the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare. When it ended in 1996, an underground electronic music scene emerged from the hurt and the rubble. Sanjin Džonlić, (Sanjin Sub, Tribalba) was there right from the start, playing first under the mentorship of DJ Enis Voloder plus other Bosnian and English members of the Interactive Music Association, before developing his own following as Sub One.
Today marks the release of his techno-inspired EP ‘Instincts’ on the Point Blank Music label. Precisely wrought tracks ‘Dream Other’, ‘Shake the Fence’ and ‘Break the Line’ all run a groove so deep you’ll need a torch to see what you’re about. Once you’re in his soundscape however, you won’t want to leave, as Sub One’s sound is mystical, tribal and utterly hypnotic.
Alongside this, we’ve just launched our Point Blank Music YouTube channel which is the new home for all the best music from PB students. Click here to subscribe and get involved.

The latest release on Point Blank’s in-house record label is a new EP from Sub One
Sanjin said: “Visits from the techno nomads like Spiral Tribe, Desert Storm Sound System and others to the post-war Sarajevo in the mid-90s left a big mark on me, shifting my life’s focus and love to electronic music. Since 2010 I’ve been fully devoted to intensive practice and perfecting my skills in my DJ sets.”
Following taking to the decks in his teens, Sub One has cooperated with artists from around the world, working closely with promotional organisation Positive Sound, and performing at some incredible venues including the devastated Sarajka Mall – a symbol of Sarajevo’s socialist past.
After equipping his home studio in Sarajevo in 2014, Sub One completed a Music Production Diploma at Point Blank. He plans to take more modules at Point Blank to gain a Master Diploma. Sanjin said: “Being a student and working with Ski Oakenfull, Freddy Cuin, Tom O’Grady, Hector Hernandez and students from around the world gave me a whole new perspective in many areas and helped me improve my knowledge and techniques in sound design and production.”
“This also improved my professional music career, giving me new opportunities such as lecturing in DJ schools to young people eager to find more about music production. I am very thankful to all my instructors and the Point Blank team.”
Instincts is Sub One’s second release, launching in the wake of his 2015 EP ‘Chances’, made in collaboration with Mateo Scala and put out to national acclaim on Croatian label Family Groove Records.
