At Point Blank, we pride ourselves on the opportunities we are able to provide for our students – both past and present. As we like to inspire creativity within our students and enable them to get real-world performance experience, we teamed up with the inimitable Phil Ramacon to present a London Open Mic night. If you’re a singer, songwriter or live act, Phil’s Open Mic Night is the perfect place for you to showcase your talents. If you would like to perform, all you need to do is turn up; the pub, The Stag’s Head, Hoxton, has a back-line setup and there will be a sound engineer present at the event to ensure you’re sounding your best! The next Open Mic is on Wednesday 24th July, and starts at 8pm with sign up open from 7pm, and continues on every other Wednesday. Keep an eye on our social announcements and Facebook events page for regular updates.
Phil Ramacon, the host of the popular Open Mic night, has 25-years experience in the industry and has worked with the likes of Gregory Isaacs, Neneh Cherry, Jimmy Cliff, Marianne Faithful and toured with the legendary Bob Marley. The Grammy Award-winning pianist, performer and Point Blank lecturer is renowned for his co-writing credits on ‘Buffalo Stance’ with Neneh Cherry. Don’t forget to check out our singing and songwriting courses.
The Stag’s Head, our location, is a Grade II listed, Neo-Georgian pub, designed by inter-war architect A E Sewell, famous for being the in-house architect at Truman’s Brewery. Having stood at 55 Orsman Road since 1856, the pub would have originally had strong links to the nearby Grand Union Canal, with its clientele mainly being workers from the local factories and wharves. Sewell reconstructed the pub in 1936 and since then it has remained largely unchanged, retaining the original bar backs, counters, panelling, fireplaces, mirrors and tile work. This pub is a true, original fixture of Orsman Road, situated adjacent to our studios. This, and the intimate space set up for live music, makes it the perfect place for us to host this event. See you there!
Our Open Mic is regularly attended by key figures in the music Industry who are renowned for scoping out world-class talent. In addition to the previously mentioned Phil Ramacon who hosts the night, we’ve been visited by the likes of Francis Pettican, President of the publishing company Fairwood Music International, who has worked with the likes of Bob Marley, David Bowie and U2 to mention a few. It’s important to get down to these events as you never know who could be in the crowd.
Leona Lewis, Aluna Francis and Izzy Bizu are just a few of the former Point Blank students who have gone on to achieve global success and industry recognition. If you think you have what it takes to join their ranks, why not take a look at our singing and songwriting courses.
