Student Success Catch-Up: Goldierocks (Ministry of Sound, Burning Man, The Selector)

Point Blank students are constantly finding success during and after their studies, but we also regularly get individuals who are already successful in the industry coming to us to sharpen their skills. DJ and radio presenter Goldierocks (Ministry of Sound, Burning Man) is a perfect example of this. At the end of last year, she studied our Traktor Weekend DJ Course in London to help her learn the popular software inside out. Below, we caught up with her to see how 2015 was for her, and what she’s got coming up plus much more.

How was 2015 for Goldierocks? What was the best part of the year for you?

“DJing Burning Man in the Nevada desert was pretty spectacular and a dream come true. Also seeing my globally syndicated new music radio ‘The Selector’ be broadcast in Cuba, was a historic moment. We’re in 44 countries around the world now on FM which feels amazing. We won the Mixcloud award for the ‘World’s Best Online Music Radio Show’ in 2015 too which is incredible. I did a TEDx talk on the ‘Enduring Power of Radio to Change Lives’ in October last year, which was very challenging but has been very well received…and through it I hope to establish ‘Hope Radio’, a community radio station run for refuges by refugees.”

What advice would you give to people looking to get into the industry?

“Be authentic, be kind and find your unique selling point. There’s no point in doing this by numbers – you’ve got to be passionate and live and breathe it, so you can ride those ups and downs. Experiment, push boundaries, be creative and don’t be afraid to get things wrong in order to create something really unique.”

How did you find your studies at Point Blank?

“Phenomenal. The instructor was very patient, open minded and knowledgeable. It was challenging but such an eye opener and really has helped progress to that next stage – I will definitely return back to Point Blank for ‘top up’ technical training and thoroughly recommend the courses.”

What does 2016 hold for Goldierocks?

“Lots of touring! So far in the diary are dates in Nepal, Cuba, Myanmar, Cannes and the Alps. I’m so excited for the UK festival season too, of course I’ll be documenting all my travels in my monthly column for DJ Mag. We’ll be doing lots of exciting things on Ministry LIVE (the official radio station of Ministry of Sound of which I’m an anchor presenter) including broadcasts from Ibiza and my first in-depth music documentary. I’m itching to get back to the white isle. And the club turns 25 in September! So no doubt they’ll be many an exciting party down Elephant & Castle way.”
