Student Success December 2017: WABE, Anthony Roofe

Each month, we catch up with Point Blank students and alumni to showcase their successes since studying with us, giving you an insight into how music industry careers are established and nurtured right here at Point Blank. In our Student Success December 2017, we caught up with WABE, a Sicilian house duo, and Anthony Roofe, who’s story of getting his track played by Annie Mac is a testament to perseverence. Check out our LondonLos AngelesIbizaMumbai and Online course pages to begin your own journey in the music industry.

WABE (Kato Management) – Music Composition

WABE are primary school friends Ale Murphy and Signor Jenk, who grew up in Palermo, Sicily. Both listened mainly to rock music from the 60s and 70s and they played in garage punk and ska bands for much of their early years. They started DJing in the early 2000s and began WABE as a to explore their interest in house and techno. As Ale, who studied Music Composition with us puts it: “WABE is about creating catchy melodies and atmospheres that put the listener in a dreamy state of mind. Also, because everything starts with a live performance, the live feeling has to be the core element in our music.”

On Point Blank, he said this: “I loved everything about PB. The contents of the course are just perfect for someone who wants to do music for a living. The environment and the atmosphere were great and the teachers amazing. You can get a lot from your classes at PB but the key is you have to be motivated!”

Anthony Roofe – BA (Hons) in Music Production and Sound Engineering

Anthony Roofe is a current degree student here at Point Blank who’s career took an exciting turn recently at a BBC Music event. Anthony told us what happened in his own words: “I went to a BBC music conference where big artists, producers and DJs would do masterclass talks about how they got into the industry and advice for us. During Annie Mac’s talk, loads of people were asking to give her demos. I realised I wasn’t going to get picked with my hand up with a huge crowd all putting theirs up. I just walked to the front and just put my USB on the desk next to her. By the end, she had a mountain of demos. But later that evening she tweeted me saying she wanted to play my track on her main show on Radio 1.”

“I currently have the Radio 1 track now signed as part of an EP to a very well established label that I can reveal details of soon. I have other releases planned as well as more and more bookings coming in. Let’s just say you might catch me in Ibiza next year!”

Anthony’s story illustrates the impact that a combination of talent and being at the right place at the right time can have. Follow Anthony on Soundcloud or Facebook.
