It’s week two of DJ Suketu’s studies on the second module of our Complete Electronic Music Production course online. DJ Suketu is one of India’s top DJs and also runs The Music Inc (TMI), one of Mumbai’s finest musical institutions. Last week we caught up with him after the first week of the Electronic Music Production two, which focused on beatmaking. This week is all about tightening up on the drums and giving the beat that finishing touch.
This week the introductions are over and done with and all that’s left is to get stuck into the nitty gritty. Week one sees students making some relatively sophisticated beats, but this week we learn how to really give them a professional edge and get them to really carry a track. To do this students spend time learning various techniques including parallel compression, EQ, sidechaining and phase cancellation, as well as how to use sampling and synthesis to undercut your beat and take it up a notch or two. Given that last week we looked at making a trap beat in Ableton, we thought the best example to use for week two is an embellishment of the same pattern. Watch below to learn how to underpin a kick drum with an 808 sub sound, and you’ll start to hear those classic trap elements forming. Check back next week for week three – focusing on basslines.
