Getting Creative with Samples in Ableton Live 11 with Stevie R

At pointblank Music School, we’re always excited to share the latest tips and tricks that can help our students push the boundaries of music production. Today, we’re diving into the world of Ableton Live 11, a powerful digital audio workstation that’s a favourite among our students and lecturers alike. In this week’s video tutorial, we explored the creative potential of using samples in Ableton Live 11.

Sampling is a technique that has been at the heart of electronic music production for decades. It involves taking a portion, or ‘sample’, of one sound recording and reusing it as an instrument or a sound recording in a different song or piece. Ableton Live 11 takes this technique to new heights with its advanced features and intuitive interface.

At pointblank Music School, we believe that learning should be hands-on, practical, and fun. That’s why our courses are designed to give you plenty of opportunities to experiment and create your own music. Whether you’re a beginner looking to learn the basics or an experienced producer seeking to master advanced techniques, our expert instructors are here to guide you every step of the way. You can learn more about our online or in-person courses here.

In the video, our pointblank instructor Stavros demonstrates how to use samples creatively, starting with the basics of loading a sample into a Simpler, Ableton’s powerful sampling instrument. He then shows how to manipulate the sample using various controls such as the ADSR envelope, LFO, and filters. These tools allow you to shape the sample’s sound in countless ways, from subtle tweaks to dramatic transformations.

The video also delves into more advanced techniques, such as using the Slice mode to chop the sample into smaller pieces that can be played individually. This feature opens up a world of possibilities for creating unique rhythms and melodies from a single sample.

Stavros also demonstrates how to use the Warp mode to change the tempo and timing of the sample without affecting its pitch. This powerful feature allows you to fit any sample into your track, no matter its original tempo.

Finally, the video explores the creative potential of Ableton’s MIDI effects. By applying the Random and Scale effects to the sliced sample, you can generate new musical ideas in an instant. This technique is a great way to break out of creative blocks and discover unexpected melodies and rhythms.
