Back in November 2016, Point Blank singing course graduate Viv May offered a fantastic opportunity for our students, setting them the challenge of remixing her brand new track ‘Don’t Say It’. A hotly tipped UK artist who has chalked up collaborations with Zero T, Phase and Session Victim, Viv’s strand of spirited, soulful pop has found support from Radio 1, Ministry of Sound Radio and sister label of Shogun Audio, SGN:LTD. Projects were judged on quality and originality, with winners receiving a Point Blank ‘complete’ online course of their choosing, a Synthmaster Everything bundle and Nevo Analogue Machines, Samplephonic’s hybrid synth created in conjunction with Yoad Nevo.
With over 40 entries from students, making a decision was always going to be a challenge, so much so that in the end we decided on two very different winning entries. Art Polikarpov’s imaginative remix took on a house flavour, with subtle sweeps and a catchy arpeggiated melody complimenting Viv May’s dulcet tones. Our second winner, Cavia, submitted a remix with all the elements of a Trap banger, mixing precisely chopped, pitched vocal samples with a classic drum loop and some sharp hi-hat action. Both entries were full deserved of the competition prize – there was no way we were going to be able to pick one over the other! Listen to both tracks below.
Fancy yourself as the remixer that the pop stars have on speed dial, but not quite there yet? Our Online Master Diploma course covers sound design, production, mixing, mastering and composition. You can take it from anywhere in the world and, lasting for up to 64 weeks, it’s one of the school’s most comprehensive courses.
