Black History Month Panel 2023: Creating a More Inclusive Music Industry

At Point Blank Music School, we believe in the power of conversation, especially when it revolves around pivotal topics like diversity and inclusion in the music industry. This week, we were thrilled to host an enlightening panel discussion at our Orsman Road campus in celebration of Black History Month. The evening was not just an event; it was a testament to the passion, dedication, and resilience of individuals who have carved a niche for themselves in the music world.

Meet the Visionaries:

  • Raphael Adekunle of Rax Productions: Hailing from Nigeria, Raphael’s journey in the music industry is nothing short of inspiring. With a knack for recognizing talent, he has been instrumental in catapulting artists like S1MBA to global fame, even securing nominations for coveted awards like the Brit Awards.
  • Tumisha Balogun of Tag Agency: A storyteller at heart, Tumisha has dedicated her career to amplifying voices from marginalized communities. Through her agency, she has collaborated with global brands, crafting campaigns that resonate and inspire.
  • Komali Scott-Jones of the Black Music Coalition: A beacon of empowerment, Komali’s dedication to uplifting Black Women and Women of Colour in the music executive world is commendable. As an A&R Director at AWAL and a pivotal member of the Black Music Coalition, she’s championing change every single day.
  • Reece Stewart of Sony Music: Reece’s transition from a music journalist to a Senior Marketing Manager at 5K Records is a testament to his versatility and vision. He’s been the driving force behind several chart-topping hits, showcasing the power of innovative marketing.

Guided by our Senior Student Support Officer, Jamiylah Spence, whose experience runs deep in the music industry, the panel delved deep into their individual journeys, shedding light on the challenges and triumphs they’ve encountered. They shared insights on creating safe spaces within the industry, the intricate layers of allyship, and the importance of authenticity. The conversation also touched upon the significance of mental well-being, strategies to build a robust network, and the essence of staying true to oneself in an ever-evolving industry.
